Benissa is a locality on the Costa Blanca, located in the province of Alicante (Spain) between the towns Calpe and Teulada - Moraira, with a population of barely more than 13,000 inhabitants.  The municipality is full of history, culture, tradition and charm, and it also enjoys 4km of Mediterranean coast, where there are many coves and cliffs of great beauty and ecological value, which award this town an extraordinary tourist interest, as is it shown, year after year, by the thousands of visitors who come to Benissa to enjoy of its privileged climate, its beaches, its monuments, its festivities, its gastronomy and its people.

    

However Benissa is not only a tourist area, it is also a perfect place to live, as illustrated by the fact that more than 40% of its inhabitants are of European origin, mainly English and German, but also French, Belgian, Dutch, Russian and other nationalities, who have chosen the municipality of Benissa as the place where they choose to live and, in many cases, see their children grow.

    

Benissa is a town which surprises and attracts. A coast of beautiful beaches and dreamed coves which conserve their natural charm, a town centre with a historical centre formed by cobbled streets and noble houses which transfers us to the medieval times, and people with an open and cosmopolitan personality which invites all visitors to enjoy each corner of this town. Benissa's Coast. Coves, beaches and Sport port.

    

The Sport Port Club Náutico les Basetes.

This port, located on the Bay of les Bassetes, it was one of the first ports built in the area, it is situated on the border with the locality of Calpe, and it has 80 moorings and has the international Blue Flag award, which recognizes the quality of the sport port and the services it offers the users. Between those services it offers: bar, restaurant, sailing school, windsurf and catamaran, nautical shop and diving centre.

    

Benissa's Ecological Coastal Trail.

The Club Náutico les Basetes is a starting point for Benissa's Ecological Coastal Trail.  This trail offers the possibility of carrying out a pleasant trip of less than 2km through Benissa's coast. Through the same, in different parts, some coves and cliffs of extraordinary beauty and great ecological and landscape value can be enjoyed, as well as several informative panels.

 

   

The Fustera Beach.

The Fustera Beach is, from all the beaches and coves of Benissa's municipality, the one with the most services, apart from the Ecological Coastal Trail, there is also an sports and children's' games area. It is a beach with fine sand and it is located between Cala Basetes and Cala Pinets, which are accessed in a few minutes through Benissa's Ecological Coastal Trail. It also has the Blue Flag award for the quality of its clean waters and the services it offers (gangways and access for disabled, public telephone, cafeterias and restaurants, parking, the red cross, bus stop, maritime surveillance, etc).

   

However Benissa offers, in addition, other coves of great beauty.  Sand, gravel, boulder or rock beaches which always have turquoise blue waters, clean, clear and crystalline, indicating the good environmental quality, perfect to practice diving, scuba diving, fishing with rod, windsurf and sailing among others.  In Summer it is common to see many pleasure and recreational boats border the coast which joins Benissa to Calpe and Moraira, and get near to enjoy of this natural enclaves. To the already mentioned la Fustera beach and les Basetes cove, the Pinets cove, the Llobella cove, the Baladrar cove and the Advocat cove must be added. These last two have a beach bar and a restaurant where, in summer, one can enjoy of a lunch or a dinner in the open air next to the sea.

   

Benissa's Gastronomy.

Benissa offers a gastronomy with its basis on the Mediterranean diet, combining in its typical meals products from the sea and the country. The fish of the Mediterranean stand out, the great variety of stews ("Borreta de melva" , "Bull amb ceba", "Mullador de pelleta", "Sang amb ceba", "Putxero de polp", "Mullador de sangatxo", "Coques al calfó i amb mulldor") and, specially, its rices:  "arroz al horno", "arroz del señoret", "arroz con haba pelada", "arroz con judías y nabos" and, in a particular way, the reference rice of this localitie's cuisine, "El Putxero de polp". The traditional sausages also deserve a special mention, the are made in the local butchers with recipes and formulas, inherited from family tradition across several generations, which have gained a recognised prestige at a provincial level, and even national, thanks to its excellent savour.

Sports activities in Benissa.

     

Nautical Sports in Benissa.

Benissa and its sports port les Bassetes offer the possibility of learning Windsurf, Catamaran, Wakeboard, Kayac and Paddle Surf.  Watertrekking is another interesting option which offers Benissa's coast.  Snorkelling is a funny, simple and economical way of starting in the diving world, you only need goggles, snorkel and flippers for diving. Benissa offers different routes to practice snorkelling and discovering the diversity of species which offers the seabed of this locality, between which stand out the dense underwater meadows of Posidonia oceanica. All these aquatic activities will offer the possibility of enjoying the coast of this town, a universe of peace and liberty, through an extraordinary combination of views of its seabed, its cliffs and its beaches.

      

       

Trekking in Benissa.

Benissa has a landscape full of contrasts which allows combining a marine environment with a mountain one with the Sierra de Bernia, la Solana and Olta. These ranges offer the possibility of going for a walk through their routes and enjoy their natural surroundings. One of the most interesting and representative paths is the route PR-CV7 in Sierra de Bernia, and part of its tour crosses the range through a hole on the rock ("Forat") and enjoy from a natural balcony of spectacular views upon Altea and Sierra Gelada.

     

Benissa completes its sports offer with a heated indoor swimming pool with gym, Spa with Scotch showers, saunas and jacuzzi; the sports complex El Collao, which has an uncovered municipal swimming pool and tennis courts; and the Municipal Sports Centre Palau Sant Pere, where, between other sports, you can practice basket and football sala. There are also facilities to practice paddle, and a Riding centre, with facilities to practice riding sports and riding trips through beautiful field and mountain settings in Benissa.

     

Culture, tradition and festivities in Benissa.

     

Benissa, like other Mediterranean towns on the Costa Blanca, through the whole year it offers a great variety of festivities and celebrations.

     

Fira y Porrat de Sant Antoni in Benissa.

Declared of local tourist interest, and which is celebrated the second half of January. During years this fair was the commercial centre of the region, and during that period a great variety of activities, such as the blessing of animals, livestock fairs, fair attractions and medieval market, among others.

     

The patronal feasts in Benissa.

Which are celebrated to honour the Puríssima Xiqueta, on the fourth Sunday of April each year. They are the main festivities of the municipality, celebrated by the whole town, and many acts are celebrated,  religious ones, where the devotion towards their Patron saint is shown, such as the mass, the decent and rise of the Virgin before and after the procession, and festive ones, such as the coronation of the Queen of the festivities, parades, fireworks, free concerts and the traditional bullfighting acts on the town's square.

     

The Moors and Christians Celebrations in Benissa.

Celebrated to honour Saint Peter the nearest weekend to the 29th of June each year. The Moors and Christians is a traditional festivity of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, and is celebrated in many municipalities of Alicante's province, being specially famous the ones celebrated in Alcoy, declared of international tourist interest. It is a celebration which, during a weekend, offers the visitors the possibility of enjoying an spectacle with powder, spectacular costumes, parades and a lively night life in the different "cavilas" located throughout the municipality.

   

These three last celebrations are the most important, and also, during the summer months, Benissa offers in its neighbourhood and partidas, many festivities in open air.
